If you are reading this, you are either the owner of one, two, three, a house full, or even a yard full of furr babies. Welcome, we are all family here.

Whenever you are a pet owner, there’s a concern or the need for awareness on how to best care your pet.  One of the ways that I start is by focusing on the dog food I feed my little hommie.  There are many dog food brands out there.

Today I will be sharing my favorite pet food brand for small breeds, why I choose this brand, what the benefits are, and what you can expect to spend.  There is so much that goes into making a decision for how to best care for your best friend, I hope this can be a guide for you.

What Brand Do You Use?  I’ll Tell Mine.

Choosing the right dog food can be tricky and is highly based on preference.  What do I look for when shopping for dog food for my 12lbs rescue Boston Terrier Chihuahua?

  1. Are the reviews on the quality of this product good?
  2. Can I tell what the ingredients are, or does it appear to be some foreign language that I need a translator for?
  3. Will this improve my pets quality of life?
  4. Are there grainfree or food available for dogs with sensitivities to certain foods?

At the end of all these questions I landed on Blue Buffalo dog food for small breeds.  My little “Rasta” loves his Blue Buffalo.

What’s so Great About This Brand?

Blue Buffalo is an all natural brand to be trusted, their ingredients are clear and leaves nothing to the imagination.  Blue Buffalo is a NO brand:

  • No Preservatives
  • No Artificial Flavors

The best part about Blue Buffalo is that they are very transparent and allow YOU, the customer to compare dog foods brands.

What are the Food Options?

Now that you know my preferred brand, let’s talk options. Does your little buddy enjoy wet, or dry dog food, glutenfree, or corn free? Do you have a small breed puppy or dog, follow on to read about the many options that are available for our best friends pallet.

Check Out these Five Options

Blue Buffalo has five distinct lines of pet food, each of these products are targeted for the need of our furr babies.  Most of the options come in dry and wet versions.

  • Blue Life Protection Formula

(The Blue Life Protection Formula uses vitamins and minerals in conjunction with natural ingredients to provide a healthy and satisfying meal for your dog.  In addition to meat, this dry dog food contains garden veggies as well as fruits.  This product contains what I call a magical component, the LifeSource Bits.  The LifeSource Bits is an antioxidant-rich dietary formula, created to give your best friend that extra umph.)

  • Blue Freedom

(If your dog has gluten sensibility, then Blue Freedom is the right choice for you.  This product is 100% glutenfree and 100% YUM).

  • Blue Basics

(For the furr babies with increased sensibilities to traditional dog foods, Blue Basics is a limited ingredient product.  This product is glutenfree and has an inhanced limited ingredient formula to accommodate our little friends with dietary sensitivities.)

  • Blue Wilderness

(Blue Wilderness appeals to the wolves in our small breed dogs, even in my little hommie.  This protein-rich glutenfree product is a meat lovers dream; in fact, this is what my Chihuahua mix eats.  He gets his Cookie Monster on to this.)

  • Blue Natural Veterinary Diet

(This is an exclusive product; its like waiting to go into a club where your name needs to be on a special list.  Blue Natural Veterinary Diet is not available in stores, this product is only available through your veterinarians office.)

How Much Should I Expect to Spend?

When it comes to defining whether a product or brand is costly, this determination is very subjective. Costly for me is anything over $35. I spend more on the pee pads than I do for Blue Buffalo dry dog food for small breeds; with that said, let’s get into pricing.

Dry Dog Food for Small Breeds

Often times it is cheaper to purchase dog food online, I have no idea why.  For a 15 pounds bag of dry dog food for small breeds, you can expect to spend any where between $30-$38.  If you prefer a smaller bag of dog food, the 6 pounds bag will do.  For approximately $28 you can purchase a 6 pounds bag of dry dog food..

Wet Dog Food for Small Breeds

Blue Buffalo also has wet dog food options.  If your dog only eats wet foods, this is the way to go for your furr baby.  For a approximately $40 you will be able to get a case of (24) 5.5 ounce individual servings of dog food.

The Decision is Yours to Make.

You are fully equipped with the knowledge to make a decision for what food brands to shop for when looking for the best dog food for your small breed dog.  With the comparison tools that Blue Buffalo provides, you will be able to truely pinpoint the best food provider for your furr family member.  Blue Buffalo is a great company that stands on the premise of providing vitamin and mineral rich foods with options for the dietary complexities that are present in some of our miniature buddies.  With the tools that you have now, it is up to you to make a decision.

I’ve read a lot of goodness about Blue Buffalo. My chihuahua is getting a lot of allergies lately and the vet has suggested a change in food. The thing is, she’s a very picky eater and I don’t know how to maintain her on a certain diet for long period of time without adding on something nice.

Do you know the palatability of this brand in terms of their kibbles and canned food? Thank you.

My Boston Terrier Chihuahua mix was eating kibble and bits when he was adopted, and as we changed his diet slowly to Blue Buffalo’s dry food, he loved.  I would suggest that you try to incorporating maybe one of the many Blue Buffalo products into your dogs kibbles to take the place of whatever you add now to your princesses meal to test her pallet.  Because you may not be sure of to purchase, try incoorperating Blue Basics which is a great brand for dogs with sensibilities, like yours is the best way to start. “Basics” features lamb as it’s protein which may intrigue your Chihuahu’s senses. Both dry and wet dog food would be a good choice, but be sure to place your dogs textural preference into consideration.

You are right we all love our babies and want the best food for them. In my case, the fur babies purr. A good food brand is good to have. I once feed a cat a cheap grocery type of food and she developed an allergy. I found a better quality brand at a pet store and her reactions disappeared. You really do have to look out for what our furry friends eat to keep them healthy. Of course, you have to make sure they will love the taste of what they are presented with. Blue Buffalo appears to be a good brand that does both for dogs.

Thank you for your comment M. Tidbury! What’s great about Blue Buffalo is that they also cater to our purr friends and family with a variety of wet and dry food selections.
